From earthquake victim to lifesaver
On May 12, 2008, 20-year-old Jiang Yuhang was buried in ruins during the Wenchuan Earthquake. After being trapped for 125 hours, Jiang was rescued by firefighters from Shanghai.
“It was the firefighters who gave me a second life. So, I was eager to become one of them,” he said.
At the end of 2018, his wish came true and he became a firefighter, joining the same team that saved his life.
Amputated man gives back to society
On May 12, 2008, Dai Guohong and his high school classmates were buried under debris in their classroom when the earthquake hit his home of Beichuan Qiang autonomous county.
More than 50 hours after the quake, Dai was rescued. He was the only survivor from his class, but his legs had to be amputated.
Dai started swimming in 2009 to recover, eventually going on to win many gold medals at paralympic competitions at home and abroad.
Since 2016, Dai started to promote life education, and in 2018, he became a volunteer commentator at the Disaster Preparedness Learning Center in Chengdu.
‘Earthquake Boy’ realizes military dream
In 2008, the airborne troops that came to the rescue after the Wenchuan earthquake left a deep impression on Cheng Qiang. When the airborne finished the disaster relief mission and left the area, Cheng stood in the crowd holding a sign reading “I will become a paratrooper when I grow up”, leading him to be known as “Earthquake Boy”.
In 2013, Cheng signed up for military service in the airborne division.
On National Day 2019, Cheng marched in Tian’anmen Square as a member of the air force formation in the military parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the PRC’s founding.
